Nicolas Sarkozy brokers agreement between Russia and GeorgiaAs President of the European Union, Nicolas Sarkozy travelled to Russian and then Georgia on 13 August to present a peace plan for South Ossetia. The two countries agreed to the plan proposed by the French President.
While the region remains subject to tension between Georgia and Russia and the conflict has worsened over the last few days, Nicolas Sarkozy, negotiated the terms for a ceasefire in Georgia with his Russian counterpart, Dmitri Medvedev, and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The plan put forward by Nicolas Sarkozy was agreed to and added to by both countries. The new plan covers six points: Today, Bernard Kouchner will present the agreement to his European counterparts at a meeting in Brussels, to ensure the support of the EU. Once this support is agreed, the 27 EU Member States will submit the text to the UN Security Council to vote on a resolution. |
