European Council to hold an extraordinary meeting on Georgia on 1 SeptemberThe French President has called for an extraordinary European summit meeting to be held in Brussels next Monday to discuss the ongoing crisis between Russia and Georgia. Talks will concern European aid to Georgia and the future of EU relations with Russia.
France wishes to hold a genuine debate with its European partners at the summit to define the policy to be adopted with regard to Moscow. The extraordinary meeting bringing together the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the twenty-seven EU Member States will be an opportunity to reach a united position on the Russian question and see Europe emerge as a major global player. Three issues will be addressed concerning aid to Georgia: humanitarian aid, the reconstruction of the country and the EU’s capacity to send in military or civil observers on the ground to take over from Russian patrols currently deployed within Georgia’s borders. The organisation of the European Union’s future relations with Russia will also be on the agenda. |
